Anyone who has ever loved a student radio station has faced the same problem: how to get better reception out of a bad transmission। Thankfully, building a homemade radio antenna is actually a very simple procedure, requiring just a few cheap materials and a little patience.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Scrap timber Nails or screws Twine (optional) Wood glue (optional) Spool of wire Staples

AM Antenna

1. Step 1

   Build your frame from two pieces of scrap timber, cut to the same length, and make them at least two feet long. Nail or screw these to the frame in an "X" pattern, and then either add stabilizing rods, or bind with twine for stability.

2. Step 2

   Glue, nail or screw scrap wood bars on the ends of your X-shaped frame's arms.

3. Step 3

   Wrap wire around the bars on the outside of the frame, securing the front end of the wire with a staple. You can staple the wire down periodically for added security, but this is not necessary. You will need to wrap the wire around the antenna at least 100 times to build a proper homemade antenna.

4. Step 4

   Strip the end of the antenna wire of insulation, and then strip the end of a radio lead wire of insulation. Splice and solder, and then cover up with insulating tape.

   Plug the antenna lead into your radio.

   Determine the length of wire you need. An antenna like this one will boost reception for all channels, but will receive one channel with perfect clarity. As a rule, the higher the FM channel, the smaller your wire should be, with a channel down in the 87 range needing to be about 3 meters long.

7. Step 2

   Cut this wire in half, and strip the insulation from both ends of each length.

8. Step 3

   Make a simple frame for the wires. How you assemble this depends entirely on your needs: indoor or outdoor, roof or ground-based. The only fixed aspect is that the main arm needs to be long enough to support your antenna wires.

9. Step 4

   Run the wires along the frame's support arm to form a loop, and splice and solder them together at ends of the support arm. Cover the joined ends with insulating tape. The two wires should now be joined on the ends of the arm, but still open at the bottom of the loop.

10. Step 5

    Take a piece of radio lead wiring. Cut and strip the insulation from one end, and splice and solder this end to the open wires of your antenna. Cover this with insulation tape.

11. Step 6

    Plug the antenna lead into your radio.
